Hello, future flock parents! 🐔 If you've been contemplating jumping onto the chicken keeping bandwagon, now is the perfect time. We're thrilled to announce that we'll be welcoming new and aspiring flock parents throughout the year.

Since 2022, all us egg and chicken enthusiasts have been on a rollercoaster. Seriously, remember the egg and chicken catastrophe when a dozen eggs cost more than a couple of gallons of gas due to the highly pathogenic Avian Influenza? Yeah, that still hasn't quite resolved itself. . . And who could forget Chicken Feed'gate? I know I haven't! It was a challenging time for both urban and rural chicken keepers, making baking and breakfast a real adventure.

On the brighter side, the hilarious egg bootlegger videos on TikTok and Instagram have been giving me life since then, and kept all our spirits high. They've truly given my little homestead hope to continue supporting our neighbors through uncertain times. 🌞

Truly, there's no better time to start your own backyard flock, and I'm here to guide you every step of the way.

ABOUT THIS COURSE

Our 90-minute course meets the permit requirements as defined by the city of Minneapolis' Urban Agriculture bill. Whether we meet digitally or in person (depending on the health of the flock and myself), you'll be introduced to essential topics such as:

  • Choosing the right breed
  • Raising a chicken from a hatchling
  • All things chicken coops
  • How many chickens you want vs. how many you need
  • Chicken-proofing EVERYTHING
  • Chicken health & wellness
  • And a host of other poultry-related topics

If you need the class for licensing purposes, have an interest in raising your own chickens for the freshest eggs on the planet, or want resources for city chicken keepers, you've come to the right place! Plus, the class is perfect for individuals and families seeking pets with dual or more than dual purposes.

On a serious note, last year presented numerous challenges due to medical reasons for me personally.  I didn't know when I would be able to resume my advocacy for urban gardening and farming, but I'll tell one of the best things in the world for me was sitting and healing with a very mature hen on my lap.  With her and the rest of my non feathered care team, I am now fully prepared to resume assisting you all in starting your chicken keeping journeys. 

We are currently offering 4 classes a month, each accommodating up to 5 households per session. Don't be scared to jump into a class with a stranger, we're all on the same journey. This morning I woke up with Thanksgiving on my mind. Yes we are a few months out but the fall like chill the last couple of days had me craving turkey and ALL of the fixins. My sister sent me a simple, "don't do it!" message that inspired me to rethink a massive trip to the grocery store to search for cranberries and cubed bread. Now several hours later I've settled on Sauteed Chicken with onions and peppers over a bed of Quinoa with Steamed brocolli [fresh from the garden]. Today my family has been save from organizing chopping and cleaning for such a big meal. Next week you may be seeing the spread before the Big Spread. Happy Harvesting!

Mini Green House (1)

This is the BIG ~ Mini project we had been putting off due to weather and just pure plain busyness. In our exuberance and excitement over 70 degree weather we transplanted some seedlings too early and didn't heed the cool evening/morning temps nor our strict watering regimen. MY BAD!! **blush ~ blush** I thought it would work out better for me and my two cohorts (hubby and daughter) if we devised a system that could take full advantage of the not so unusual bipolar Minnesota warm then freezing weather without killing all our precious transplants in the process. So since we have ample garden and yard space we took on the task of a greenhouse. I always hear rave revues about this system and truthfully it has been working on a micro level wth the milk jugs so I figured why not?
