If you have been wondering how to jump onto the chicken keeping bandwagon you are in luck my friends! We'll be taking new and wannabe flock parents through mid August 2023. After 2022's egg and chicken catastrophe... You know the one, where a dozen eggs cost more than a couple gallons of petrol due to a highly pathogenic Avian Influenza? How about Chicken Feed'gate? 

It was pretty scary out in these urban and rural streets when it came to baking or breakfast... On the brighter and dare I say sunnier side of things, the hilarious egg bootlegger videos of TikTok and Instagram are still fresh in my minds eye and gave me hope enough to continue offering support to my fellow neighbors as we live through very uncertain times.  

Honestly, you could't have chosen a better time to get on board with growing your very own backyard flock and I'll hold your hand along the way.


ABOUT THIS COURSE...


It's a 90 minute course which meets the permit requirements as defined by the city of Minneapolis' Urban Agriculture bill. While together digitally or in person (depending on health of the flock and my own) you'll be introduced to topics such as:
  • Choosing the right breed
  • How to raise a chicken from a hatchling
  • All things chicken coops
  • How many chickens you want VS how many you need
  • Chicken-Proofing EVERYTHING
  • Chicken Health & Wellness
  • And a host of other poultry-related topics

IF you need the class for licensing purposes, you have an interest in raising your own chickens for the freshest eggs on the planet, and you want resources for city chicken people, you've come to the right place! Plus, the class is perfect for individuals and families who are seeking pets with dual or more than dual purposes.

Then it was September As a blogger there can be a little bit of guilt for not posting as regular as one would like... Speaking for myself that is. Eat your backyard

Backyard Foraged Salad Foraging was a topic my elderly neighbor who was also a retired science teacher and botanist spoke about constantly. Friends thought my brother and I were crazy when we stopped mid game (football) to pick and eat a juicy looking patch of wood sorrel we spotted on the other side of the fence. I can't remember all of the lessons she taught but I remember her passion for eating local and not overlooking the simplest of plants. It's because of her that I jumped at an opportunity to learn some foraging here in the city. I've participated in some monthly classes that have helped me and by proxy my family, become more of an adventurous eaters. Below is a  picture of a salad foraged from our backyard. We paired it with our baked chicken [no pictured] and this meal was more than a hit!  The greens included lambs quarters, Orach (purple mountain spinach), Plantain, Egyptian walking onions, Wood Sorrel, Flat leaf Parsley, Raspberries, and Purslane. Mini Green House (1)

This is the BIG ~ Mini project we had been putting off due to weather and just pure plain busyness. In our exuberance and excitement over 70 degree weather we transplanted some seedlings too early and didn't heed the cool evening/morning temps nor our strict watering regimen. MY BAD!! **blush ~ blush** I thought it would work out better for me and my two cohorts (hubby and daughter) if we devised a system that could take full advantage of the not so unusual bipolar Minnesota warm then freezing weather without killing all our precious transplants in the process. So since we have ample garden and yard space we took on the task of a greenhouse. I always hear rave revues about this system and truthfully it has been working on a micro level wth the milk jugs so I figured why not?
