Garden Fuss

It only took us 2 hours but we finished the birthday cake and still have almost an hour to get ready for the party. I don't know if I'll look as good as the cake but I will try. HAPPY FRIDAY!!!

We installed it today with the help of my technical background and the hubby's plumbing background. We did it and no one was injured in the process! When doing home repair though it's never just cut and dry. It was more like move old one out, clean area, repair wall behind old one including new insulation, drill new hole for waste line,Then start the installation of new appliance. Now that we are finished and the first small load has been cleaned and dried we are so ready for relaxation. But of course the garden calls. The celery seeds have just joined the leek seedlings in the tank. I am so excited because we have baby leeks popping up in all their containers. This adrenalin rush won't last though so now I'm planning bath and bed. Where are my new ParkSeed Magazines?

Dinner tonight is fried chops, veggie cakes, rice & gravy, with an avacado salad.

Last year we put together a compost bin using 1x6's and it was quite an endeavor. By the end of the growing season we had lost a side so we started to rethink our design. Just in-case you're a beginning gardener and you are not familiar with the word compost, our friends at Wikipedia define it as such: Compost  (pronounced  /ˈkɒmpɒst/  or  US   /ˈkɒmpoʊst/ ) is a combination of decomposed plant and animal materials and other  organic materials that are being decomposed largely through  aerobic decomposition  into a rich black  soil . The process of  composting  is simple and practiced by individuals in their homes, farmers on their land, and industrially by industries and cities.  Compost soil is very rich soil and used for many purposes. A few of the places that it is used are in  gardens ,  landscaping ,  horticulture , and agriculture . The compost soil itself is beneficial for the land in many ways...

So far we have finished ordering seeds for the 2010 season..... I think anyway! Other than starting seedlings in-doors, we are getting or four legged family member all registered and licensed for the year. I don't know what costs more yet the dog or the van. I love them both but I can say it's much nicer to cuddle with the van. PLUS I love kisses! HAPPY ALMOST FRIDAY GARDENERS!!!

Today is the day we start some seedlings. First order of business are the leeks and celery. While researching seed starting last year we found a neat aquarium method that worked pretty flawlessly. Pictures showing exactly how to start your own seeds on a budget and without a lot of mess or fuss will be posted ASAP. First we have to get these seeds going so we'll get back to you in a little bit.

Need to get out of the house? I have been feeling the spring itch (or punch in the face like my daughter suggested) for quite some time now. All that snow is getting in my way gosh darn it.... I have been on the look out for up and coming garden events and thought I would share a link to one of my favorite garden centers.  It's called Mother Earth Gardens in Minneapolis, and their website is motherearthgarden.com   "no S in garden". They have a listing of all kinds of interesting pre-spring and spring classes which are FREE can you believe it?

These long lanky spears of ice that line our back door overhang like jagged frosty torture devices makes one long for some 80 degree whether. I could take several days at or around 60f as well, which is certainly plantable weather. Oh well, heres to wishful thinking. Plus we have not one seedling started so we do need time. This is going to be a busy week..... How many tomato plants do we need again? Back to work on the inventory and magazine flipping....

Where to start? If all the snow has given you the "let's get out of here's" like it has for us, then you're right where we are.
